It used to be that when buying two new tires, they would go on the front. New research shows that they’re better placed on the rear:
If the rear tires have more tread depth than the front tires, the front tires will begin to hydroplane and lose traction on wet roads before the rears. This will cause the vehicle to begin to understeer (the vehicle wants to continue driving straight ahead). Understeer is relatively easy to control because releasing the gas pedal will slow the vehicle and help the driver maintain control.
However, if the front tires have more tread depth than the rear tires, the rear tires will begin to hydroplane and lose traction on wet roads before the fronts. This will cause the vehicle to begin to oversteer in which the vehicle wants to spin. Oversteer is far more difficult to control, and in addition to the initial distress felt when the rear of the car starts sliding, quickly releasing the gas pedal in an attempt to slow down may actually make it more difficult for the driver to regain control, possibly causing a complete spinout.

They cut spending and laid off 17 people from a staff of around 100, and were soon in the black. The result: the firm remains privately owned, and has no debt. The second setback dates to late 1999. Concerned that its increasingly extensive levels of customer service were leading it away from its roots in the do-it-yourself market, Rackspace decided that a bare-bones offering might make sense, recalls Richard Yoo, one of the three original founders. So a subsidiary was set up that sold just web servers.

I bought my 2nd and 3rd WRT54GS routers for a project this past week… one was a re-furb (unit A) and the other was brand new (unit B). It would be safe to assume that A was probably an older unit than B, but from the markings on the unit you’d never tell the difference as both were marked clearly with “v1.1”.
A fllashed fine with Sveasoft Alchemy-pre7a but flashing B with it resulted in a response of “Firmware upgrade failed” and turning into a brick.
Which sucked. 🙁
The good news is that once you turn a WRT54GS v1.1 into a brick, the bootloader will configure the unit to listen on 192.168.1.1 and accept a TFTP put for up to two seconds after power on…. so simply uploading the stock linksys firmware results in a functional unit again.
The bad (or really just confusing) news is that you have to flash the newer v1.1 units with Sveasoft Alchemy-6.0rc5a FIRST before you can upload the newest Alchemy-pre7a which I haven’t explored to try to understand – but whatever.
Now that A and B are both working with the latest Sveasoft firmware, on with my project… TTFN

From a purely financial perspective, it’s premature to write an actual obituary for the company. In the most recent quarter, the company still had $88.5 million in cash on hand, with $7.3 million in debt.
But on Friday, the company acknowledged that its most recent quarter — one that saw a major ad campaign aimed at boosting its subscriber numbers during the holiday season — didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

I got new tires… Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 – all the way around.

The good news is that they ride much firmer than my old Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP’s, but I’ve only driven on them for 15mins or so.
The bad news is that the installers used an impact-wrench and destroyed my locking lug nut key, so I have to get a new set which will get here later this week… furthermore I’m driving around on only 4 lugs out of 5 which nobody seems to be bothered by (including the dealership) except for me.

In Phase 1, EMI consolidated roughly 100 EMI sites hosted at the two largest providers by moving those Web environments to the new Web infrastructure at Rackspace. The project team built out two fully redundant IIS Web farms, a high-availability SQL 2000 database cluster, load-balanced .Net application servers and one-plus terabytes of online storage for digital assets, Brady says. The number of servers remains consistent at 19, but Rackspace has standardized on high-end Dell PowerEdge servers that give EMI “tremendous overall improvement in performance and scalability” over the old servers, Brady says.
