Marriage turns to crap no matter what you do. At best it’s a tedious bore. At worst a living hell with financial ruin thrown in for good measure.

The memory upgrade is complete, and now I’m running with 32mb of RAM in my tivo:
Memory Statistics:
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 30826496 30302208 524288 80424960 8728576 6164480
Swap: 67104768 0 67104768
MemTotal: 30104 kB
MemFree: 512 kB
MemShared: 78540 kB
Buffers: 8524 kB
Cached: 6020 kB
SwapTotal: 65532 kB
SwapFree: 65532 kB
It does seem more repsonsive, but I’ll only know once I mess with video-extraction again and other more memory intensive stuff. Honestly, its not as fast I hoped it would be… but at least its not swapping to disk anymore.

What makes us yawn?
Next time you’re in a meeting, try this little experiment: Take a big yawn, cover your mouth out of courtesy, and watch and see how many people yawn. There’s a good chance that you’ll set off a chain reaction of yawns. Before you finish reading this question of the day, it’s likely that you will yawn at least once. Don’t misunderstand, we aren’t intending to bore you, but just reading about yawning will make you yawn, just as seeing or hearing someone else yawn makes us yawn.

This past March, I had the priviledge of checking out SXSW. Whlie I was there I ran into a booth on the show floor where a company would make a hologram of you. They had this funky camera on rails that would shoot video of you and a few months later they’d send you the finished product. I got the hologram as promised – very very cool stuff.
Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with Paul Christie, the founder of Liti Holographics. Evidentally, he’s calling up past customers to see how they’re liking their holograms. We had a long and entertaining conversation, lasting over an hour. Evidentally they invented the technology to make all this stuff happen. Good guy. Cool company.
If you have a video clip or some sort of 3-D object you want as a hologram, I highly recommend you give these guys a call. I couldn’t find a place where you could read about how to get one made, but their contact page is here.
Its really amazing technology.

Ok, I bit the bullet and signed up for Vonage. Basically Vonage provides telephone service over your internet connection – so you disconnect your local phone service and replace it with Vonage. I’ve been making tons of long distance calls as of late, so I decided that this was the cheapest way to get unlimited LD. From the people I’ve spoken too, and the things I’ve read the quality is great and the clarity is often better than standard phone service.
If you’re interested in signing up too, here’s a link to use to get your 2nd month for FREE.
Interesting Vonage facts:
- Modems and Faxing works – This not true for 8×8 or other competitors.
- 911 works – Also not true for the other providers
- Failover – If your internet connection is down, or the power is out it’ll forward to whatever phone you want, includiing your cellular phone.
- Multiple Numbers – you can have as many numbers in whatever area codes you want… so if you have family in a different state they can call you via a local number
- Works over dial-up – evidentally the codec they use is so tight that you can even do it over a 28.8k modem. Wow.
- Number Portability – you can move your existing phone number to Vonage
- Cheap – Unlimited in and outbound calls for only $35, and that includes all you can eat long distance to boot.
Additionally the $35/month plan also throws in:
- FREE Call Waiting
- FREE Voicemail
- FREE Call Forwarding
- FREE Repeat Dialing
- FREE Call Transfer
- FREE Caller ID
- FREE Caller ID Block
My VoIP box should be here next week. I hope things go well – I’ll report how things go.

Keeping Small Business Off the Street
Rackspace, a profitable, San Antonio-based web-hosting company, wanted to raise $50 million in the capital market. But Sarbanes-Oxley simply made it too expensive. So Rackspace’s executives decided to hold off going public for at least two years, when they hope to be so big that absorbing the extra costs won’t be too painful. Sarbanes-Oxley “makes the efficiency of the capital market lower for a smaller company,” says Rackspace president Lanham Napier. “And when you don’t get money as quickly, your growth is impacted.”

Fastest growing Hosting Companies over last year Hosting
A table of the Hosting Providers who grew the fastest over the year September 2002 to October 2003 is provided as an excerpt from our latest Hosting Provider Server Count. Companies are included in the filter if they started September 2002 with more than 600 servers, and finished October 2003 with at least 1000, and grew at a rate of 66% or better, year on year. This removes hosters which can show a significant percentage increase by virtue of being small at the start of the period.

Microsoft’s VSS: Can a Snapshot Ease Backup Woes?
Paul Wimmer, Windows manager with the intensive hosting division of Rackspace, reports he has not seen any demand for VSS as a backup tool among his clientele. “VSS is not a substitute for routine backups, it’s more of an add-on to that,” he says. While he does see limitations to the technology, he says it also better empowers end-users. “If you’re on a shared file system, and it’s backed up, you can go to the last backup the night before. However, there’s always an in-between period that’s in the dark. VSS will, on a pre-determined schedule, copy that information that wasn’t backed up yet to another volume, from which it can be restored.” Wimmer notes that files on Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 servers can also be copied by VSS residing on a Windows Server 2003 system in the data center.
